Super Typhoon Fung-wong Ravages the Philippines: Two Lives Lost and Large-Scale Evacuations Reported

The Philippines has been hit hard by Super Typhoon Fung-wong, resulting in at least two people dead and forced the evacuation of more than 1.4 million individuals.

Authorities stated that the powerful weather system triggered extensive flash flooding, coastal inundation, mudslides, and destructive gale-force winds, leading to the relocation of millions of people across the country.

Widespread Damage and Emergency Operations

In the town of Pandan, a severely affected area, emergency crews documented rising waters reaching the tops of houses and homes being swept away by the powerful currents.

“Our personnel saved fourteen people stranded atop a house surrounded by water in a flood-prone area,” an emergency official explained. One resident also called in panic, saying his home’s roof was at risk of tearing away by the wind. We rescued him along with four family members.”

As of Monday morning, officials announced at least two deaths: one from drowning on the island and a second individual who died after her home gave way on Samar island.

Typhoon Strength and Projected Path

The super typhoon was downgraded to a severe tropical storm early Monday as it crossed the Philippines’ largest island, where the capital is located.

Per meteorological authorities, its maximum winds dropped from 115 mph to 102 mph, but gusts were still reaching over 170 mph.

The storm system is projected to lose strength as it moves north toward Taiwan.

Relief and Assessment

The national disaster response service stated it was still working to evaluate destruction to infrastructure and homes.

Approximately thousands of shelters were activated to accommodate tens of thousands of households.

Previous Storms and Climate Impact

Fung-wong struck just days after Typhoon Kalmaegi, which killed hundreds of lives and left dozens unaccounted for before moving on to Vietnam, where it killed five.

Search operations for the missing persons were halted on Sunday over risks to emergency personnel.

The climate crisis is causing tropical storms more intense and frequent. Fung-wong is the 21st typhoon to impact the nation this year.

Scientists have found that the frequency of super-typhoons striking the islands has increased doubled over the last two decades.

Global assessments indicate that intense storms result in approximately US$3.5 million in damage for the Philippines annually.

The nation’s leader declared a state of emergency on Thursday because of the severe damage caused by Kalmaegi and anticipated impacts from the new storm.
